The King Lives On

I was driving cross Texas in my old Willis Jeep
Looking for work, it'd been nearly a week
To take my mind off my troubles I turned my radio on
It was Elvis' birthday and they were playing his songs
Pulled in a gas station, enough cash for a tank
And maybe a candy bar and something to drink
When there stood at the vending machine
A man that I knew who was once called "The King"
His sideburns were gray, nearly down to his chin
He pulled out some change and he dropped it in
Though he wasn't as slim as a hillbilly cat
Matter of fact he was kind of bald and a little fat
He tugged on the lever but was a quarter shy
So I spotted him one and then I said "Hi"
I said, "I don't mean to stop and stare"
And he said, "That's alright, Son, they do everywhere"
Then he pulled that lever and with a royal touch,
A Snickers come out and he said, "Thank you very much"

I drove on down the road a ways
'Til I come to a toll booth and I had to pay
The attendant there, there was something about him
Seems like I'd seen him somewhere.
He leaned over and I handed him a buck
And he said, "This one's on me
Here's your money back, Chuck"
I said, "That's not my name but I know that face"
Then I thought to myself
He must be that fella from that other place
A puzzling question come into my mind
Was sending shivers up my spine,
I was going to, but before I could ask it
He said, "Please move that Jeep, Chuck
You'e holding up the traffic"

That unsettled my stomach so I needed a bite to eat
I spotted a Burger King and thought
I'd have myself a little treat
I pulled in the drive and was looking for a place to park
Then I saw him again and he was running through the dark
I watched him run inside and I tried to follow him in
But he disappeared behind a door marked "Men"
I ordered a Whopper and I watched the crowd go by
He never did come out and I wondered why
So I walked on over and I peeked inside but he was gone
Must have crawled out the window and caught a ride
I looked around the ol' washroom but I was alone
Though something of The King still lingered on
For there on the basin by the soap was a ring
And I knew at last I had met
The King lives on and on
And on and on and on,
And on and on and on,
The King lives on
And on and on and on
And on and on and on
And on and on and on
The King lives on
